Show Information

The History Boys

Talented but rough-edged British schoolboys have their worlds changed forever when two teachers with opposing viewpoints on education engage in a battle to get them into Oxford and Cambridge. Written by the renowned Alan Bennett in 2004, it won the 2005 Olivier Award for Best New Play.

The main theme is the purpose of education. Throughout the play, various characters question the best method for educating the titular boys. Hector and the Headmaster embody the two most extreme sides of the debate. While the Headmaster believes that education is just the means to an end, the end being entrance to a top-tier university, Hector believes that education is the end in and of itself. Irwin and Mrs. Lintott fall more in the middle of the spectrum, though both are willing to do what is necessary to prepare the students for their examinations. Overall, Bennett presents a cynical view about the state of British education.

Age 16+ advised, the show contains adult themes and adult language
